Based on
the experience of British heavy dragoons in Flanders, the Board of General Officers set
about revising and modernizing saddlery and equipment standards. They ordered a new pattern o
f saddle, based on the Elliot saddle but with extensions behind the cantle (known as fans),
which took the place of the pillion as well as a myriad of other changes. They issued the
order in 1796 and the saddle was almost universally adopted not only in heavy dragoons
service, but among the light dragoons, household cavalry, general staff, Royal Horse
Artillery, Corps of Drivers, and even the native troops of the East India Company.
Although some historians like to talk about the 1805 pattern hussar saddle, which saw
service among some of the hussars & light dragoons, the 1796 heavy dragoon saddle is
really the first universal pattern. This reproduction is based on the original ridden by
Cornet Gape of the Scots Greys at Waterloo. This pattern of saddle remained the standard
for heavy dragoons and artillery right into the 1850s and even later in the Household
Cavalry. In more local terms, this also would have been the saddle used by the escort of
Inniskilling dragoons that came with the Ross' and Cockburn's expeditionary force to
Maryland in 1814, as well as underneath many of its staff. I'm currently working on the
accessories that were specified in the 1796 Orders including the holsters and valise.
Officers' and the Royal Artillery drivers' versions are also available.
