Products - Saddles - English Heavy Dragoon Saddle

[IMAGE: English Heavy Dragoon Saddle on a Horse]

While typically called merely a 'trooper's saddle' or 'demi-pique' in orderly books and supply returns, the English heavy dragoon saddle had a long run in service. While this type of saddle appears much earlier, it seams to be the standard British troopers' saddle by the 1680's as it replaced the increasingly obsolete 'great-saddles' and 'pad-saddles' of the 17th century. The great saddle's high burrs, cantle, and bolsters which helped protect an armored rider gave way to a streamlined, lighter military saddle in the model of the 'Selle a Royal'. The burrs & cantles, collectively called 'piques' or 'peaks', became much smaller and shorter. This still helped keep the rider balanced and equipment in place with a significantly reduced penalty in weight, at the same time mimimizing the risk of being pinned under a fallen horse as was a concern with the great saddle . While no documents defining a standard pattern exist, the 1742 clothing book, the 1748-1760 Morier portraits, and the general orders of the Duke of Cumberland show this type to be standardized in practice, being nearly identical in use for all British cavalry regiments. While some heavy regiments adopted 1756 Light Troop Saddles after 1763, the old 'trooper's saddle' remained the standard until 1788. Much like the French Selle de Dragons, the English heavy dragoon saddle has a place for everything a trooper needs on service, with a balance and seat much like a dressage saddle. Like all reproduction saddles I make, this saddle is made with the best quality English leather, all hand-forged hardware, and only hand stitching.
