Royalist
emigre cavalry officers in England during the French Revolution, brought with them
classic military saddlery from the continent of Europe, including hussar saddlery. Through
the 1790's a fusion of English civilian and hussar saddle trees created an English-styled
hussar saddle; it had the basic structure of the hussar saddle with extended 'spoons' on both
the pommel and cantle, but finished in the English manner. This type of saddlery showed up
commonly in English civilian and military use starting in the late 1790's. It was commonly
available from civilian saddlers, in fact much of what is known about English hussar saddles
comes from the 1809 Essex catalogue, which advertised the saddlery and hardware of many firms
in the Birmingham area. This type of saddle shows up quite a bit among Light dragoon officers,
staff officers, and even militia officers right through the Napoleonic Wars. This saddle
would typically be covered with a cloth shabraque, and secured with a circingle in the
Hungarian style. The shabraque often very elaborate for many light cavalry officers, but it
was usually very plain drab as with many in the general staff, including Lord Wellington
himself who preferred dark blue laced in the same color. Curiously enough, as French
emigres returned to France during the Consulate and Empire, this type of saddle
was brought back to France and used by many Napoleonic officers, including Marshall Lannes.
This reproduction is based on one documented to be from a French royalist who returned to
France, just prior to the hundred days.
