[IMAGE: Elliot Jennifer Saddle on Horse]

The Elliot Jennifer has a solid chain of provenance to Captain Elliot of Crenshaw's Battery. It currently resides in the collection of the Museum of the Confederacy. It is one of the most beautiful, well-made saddles I have ever examined. Fine calfskin covers the pommel, cantle, gullet, and bars. Immaculate welted seems secured the pigskin seat to the saddle skirts. Four different types of decorative brass saddle nails secured the various parts in place. In terms of quality the Elliot Jennifer is very similar to the Clarksville depot officer's Jennifers presented to Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. The Elliot Jennifer probably represents earlier construction from the Clarksville depot. A welted seam connects the pigskin seat to a seperate piece of caflskin that covers the upper face of the cantle. This seam came apart some time in the service life of the Elliot, but given its placement in a stress area this isn't surprising. The later Lee and Davis presentation saddles omitted this seam. The hardware on the Elliot Jennifer was very similar to Federal saddle hardware. The slot plates and pommel shield were almost identical to their Federal counterparts. The pommel shield differred only in having letters of a slightly different font and slightly askew letter placement. They may well have been hand-punched individually into the brass. Brass screws secure the flaps in all visible areas. In classic contrast, the brass rings for the crupper and breastplate were secured with plain forged iron staples. The gullet of the saddle was hand quilted up to the hemp webbing suspension in the seat. This quilting opened the gullet up to allow for more airflow than if it had been simply grounded on the top of the bars. The cut and attention to detail of the this saddle make it a master example of the 19th century saddler's art.

Saddle only: $1550 (Saddle Tree will be an additional charge, at market price)
Given the difficulty and variablity in procuring accurate, mechanically sound Jennifer saddle trees, I have to list the tree cost separately. If you already have a good tree, I should be able to build with it and forgo the charge for the tree.
