The skeleton Jennifer is the classic Confederate saddle of the Army of Northern Virginia.
The Clarksvile depot records indicate a high volume of production, which considered small
by Fedaral standards, is still nonetheless impressive. Records on leather allowances for
these saddles indicate that 'skeleton' did not mean quarter-strap rigging without skirts.
In the context of Jennifer saddles it meant quite the opposite. English rigging with
fairly substantial rounded skirts seems to have been the norm. Skeleton, in context,
refers to the uncoverd seat, denoting enlisted grade. Given the volume of production,
brass screws seem to have been in short supply. Most parts were nailed in place, with
screws used in critical stress points. Clipped corner slot plates, CS pommel shields, and
rings secured by forged iron staples complete the hardwere of this saddle. The photo shown
is of my own well-used skeleton Jennifer. Subsequent saddles have the ends of the bars
covered with leather pieces cut from the scraps leftover from cutting out the skirts.
Skeleton Jennifers are available with girth billets either nailed directly to the saddle
tree, or stitched to webbing, both appear to be equally as common. New photos should be
coming soon.

Saddle only: $280 (Saddle Tree will be an additional charge, at market price)
Given the difficulty and variablity in procuring accurate, mechanically sound Jennifer
saddle trees, I have to list the tree cost separately. If you already have a good
tree, I should be able to build with it and forgo the charge for the tree.
